BROCKHAMPTON Releases New Album 'ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE' and Announces Final Album
Popular hip-hop collective BROCKHAMPTON released their sixth album entitled ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE on April 9.
Along with ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE, BROCKHAMPTON played a special virtual performance, which broadcasted live from the chapel at Rick Rubin's Shangri-La studio. The band played through the new full-length album for the first time ever during the show.
The album is the first of two albums set for a 2021 release date. Bandleader Kevin Abstract tweeted, "2 brockhampton albums in 2021 - these will be our last," leaving fans anxious and uncertain about the band's future.
The news of a final BROCKHAMPTON album is extremely troubling, but similar claims have been made in the past, with promotional strategies referring to SATURATION III as "the last studio album by BROCKHAMPTON." Luckily, the 2017 album was not the boy band's last release together, so many fans are skeptical of the finality of their upcoming work.
Recently, Abstract shared that he is "tired" of BROCKHAMPTON's label as a boy band. He continued, "I feel like what we were trying to do we already did, with redefining [the term]. I just want to make music and let people call it whatever they want at this point. I don’t want to push this one thing.”
Although it is unlikely that ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE and the band's upcoming release are the end of BROCKHAMPTON forever, it is possible that the group is leaving the title "boy band" behind to create something new.
ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE features collaborations with several artists, including Danny Brown ("BUZZCUT"), JPEGMAFIA ("CHAIN ON"), and A$AP Rocky ("BANKROLL").
The album is an artful blend of unforgettable melodies, strong beats, and impactful lyrics. An emotional climax to the album and sequel to "THE LIGHT", "THE LIGHT PT. II" focuses on Joba's past and traumas. "The light is worth the wait, I promise,” in a soul-stirring conclusion he sings, "even though I’m mad, even though you’re gone, you live on / And the day I have kids, I’ll tell ’em ’bout Grandpa and how great he is.”
