Toro Y Moi is the enigmatic alter ego of Bay Area A-Lister Chaz Bear, whose multifaceted exploits span across nearly every cavity of indie music today. He released two new singles, "Postman" and "Magazine", in late January 2022 in anticipation of his seventh studio album, Mahal, which is set to be released on April 29th via Dead Oceans.
In typical Toro Y Moi fashion, "Postman" is a bubbly fusion of low fidelity funk and indie computer music. The sparse vocals detail a recurrent interaction between Bear and his postman, with Bear steeped in anticipation of a letter he hopes to receive. The track’s striking use of negative space enunciates the feeling of repetition, leading the listener to believe there might be something occurring beneath a surface level dialogue.
"Magazine" subscribes to a similar ideology, but takes a less minimal route. Jazzy melodies and dreamy instrumentation cushion the ethereal featured vocals of Salami Rose Joe Louis, painting a more atmospheric landscape than it’s nuanced predecessor.
Both "Postman" and "Magazine" feel right at home in the Toro Y Moi catalog, and further solidify Bear’s unwavering ability to create music that is both high caliber and succinctly peculiar.
