In the last month, now internationally known Atlanta rapper Gunna released his second studio album "WUNNA". "WUNNA" consists of eighteen tracks that thoroughly reflect where Gunna currently stands in his music career. From his signature yet developed melodic sound to his carefully picked features to his lyrics that tell underlying stories, "WUNNA" is a job well done.
THE SOUND
Gunna has a signature melodic sound. Whether the tempo of the song is fast or slow, he raps with an effortless flow that adds just the right touch to the usually Turbo or Wheezy crafted beat. On "WUNNA", Gunna upholds this sound but develops it to a great extent. You can hear every single chord, making the quality unbeatable. On songs like "ARGENTINA", "MET GALA", and "MOTW", we hear the perfect "cruising down the highway" music. These tracks make listeners feel good and light inside. On songs like "GIMMICK" and "ADDYS", we hear a more provocative sound that hypes us up and could be played at a party. This variance of sounds was expected from Gunna, but it does not go unnoticed as it is necessary on an album so that every track doesn't mesh together and sound the same. One phenomenal variance to Gunna's sound on "WUNNA" was on "ROCKSTAR BIKERS & CHAINS". Gunna has a history of working with his producers on a sound that can tell a story even without lyrics. On this track, the beat is a rock and roll infused beat that fits the title of the song and the lyrics perfectly and actually overrides them in the best way possible. We have seen this before on "Who You Foolin" on "Drip Or Drown 2", where Gunna raps on an Asian infused beat. Another phenomenal variance to sound on "WUNNA" is the track "NASTY GIRL/ON CAMERA". On this track, Gunna has a slower tempo on the first half of the song for "NASTY GIRL", and then the tempo speeds up and the song morphs into "ON CAMERA". This track shows mastery and it is a big milestone for Gunna in terms of enhancing and perfecting his sound. Because of all of these variances of sound, and the fact that all the sounds are still quality, the sound receives a 10/10 on the Intersect 1-10 rating scale.
THE RAPPING
Gunna has a smooth and melodic flow that is very unique to him. When we hear a Gunna song, we can always identify his voice. Gunna continues this flow on "WUNNA". But the most impressive part of his rapping on "WUNNA", was that he told stories. The album takes us through different stories from a love affair in Argentina, to rockstars and their bikes and chains, to the Met Gala. This is very noteworthy for Gunna as he just started really getting into storytelling to the best of his ability. Along with storytelling, Gunna adds features that have flows that compliment him very well. For example, he features Travis Scott on "TOP FLOOR", and it was the perfect choice for a feature because Travis' voice compliments Gunna's voice and they both sound very fitting on the astronomical beat. Because of all of this, the rapping on "WUNNA" receives a 10/10 on the Intersect 1-10 rating scale.
THE ART BEHIND THE ALBUM
"WUNNA" is special because it not only tells stories, but it tells stories that are true to Gunna. It also perfectly marks the point where Gunna is at in his career, literally and metaphorically. "WUNNA" is an all-around reflection of Gunna like an album should be. Because of this, it deserves not only our high ranking, but it deserves all of the accolades that it has received as well. On our Intersect 1-10 rating scale, the art behind the album receives a 10/10.
