Jacob Mosley is a 20-year-old photographer and creator from Houston, Texas. He has taken photos of/for major people in pop culture such as Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty, Gunna, and more. This interview is about Mosley's journey in and view of the world of music.
Jacob, why did you decide to brand yourself as "Dior" instead of using your name?
At the time I was looking for a new Instagram name. I looked up the meaning of Dior before I even thought about rocking it, I just wanted to see what it was about. Dior means "the future". At the time I was taking photos pretty heavy getting into my craft, so I just put it together: Dior Vision.
What is it like being a photographer in an era where everyone takes photos on phones?
I think it has definitely made things better because it allows me to see different perspectives, I get inspired by everything. Even phone photography inspires me because I love innovation, so I admire the usage of phones in photography.
Why is that skill and service still needed considering the usage of smart phone cameras?
I think the usage of real cameras is still needed because being able to change and edit a shot in different ways is important and better for manipulation.
So, Jacob, you have taken pictures for/of some very influential people in the world of pop culture. Who are some of these people and how did you make that happen?
A lot of people like my shots with Lil Uzi, Playboi Carti, and 6ix9ine. It really just took being in the field, building my portfolio and connections, and just reaching out to people. I couldn't be afraid to speak my mind to people and ask for a chance. A lot of times it worked out so from there it just went uphill.
Out of all of the artists you have photographed and worked with, who’s your favorite to work with and why?
Probably Carti because we know a lot of the same people. It's on a friendly basis when we shoot so yeah definitely him. Plus, not to be biased but I love his work too.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to become known for their photography?
Make your own style. Find your style and stick to it. Figure out what you like and don't follow trends. From there, your style will become evident to others.
