Mariah the Scientist has unveiled her latest single, “Is It a Crime,” featuring fellow genre-blurring star Kali Uchis. Out now via Epic Records, the sultry, slow-burning track marks the duo’s first-ever collaboration and continues to build anticipation for Mariah’s upcoming album Hearts Sold Separately, due August 22.
Over lush, atmospheric production from Mat1k, Oliver Easton, and Nineteen85, the two artists trade verses about love’s complications and emotional risk. Mariah questions the nature of romantic vulnerability with the line “Is it a crime to fall in love a couple times?” while Kali responds with her signature flair: “If loving me is jail, then you’re my prisoner.”
The release follows the success of Mariah’s Gold-certified single “Burning Blue,” which cracked the Billboard Hot 100 and dominated both Rhythmic and Urban radio charts. With “Is It a Crime,” she showcases a more intimate, ethereal side—further proof of her growing versatility. Fans can catch Mariah performing the track live during her Lollapalooza set on August 3, while Kali embarks on her Sincerely, tour later this month. Together, the two offer a dreamy, melancholic anthem that underscores their shared talent for fusing tenderness with edge.
