Bay Area-born electronic music producer summerneverlasts., also known as Summer Roman, released their debut album under their musical moniker on October 12, 2022.
Since moving to Los Angeles a few months ago, the artist has worked not only to immerse themself in the existing LA music scene, but also to expand and reinvent it. Roman's live music event series, playfully titled Summer & Friends, has served as a space for rising independent talents to share music, collaborate, and socialize.
Roman brings listeners along on a family trip to Italy with A Requiem Of Self (07.11.22-07.13.22), where they wrote everything on only a phone and a laptop. The vocal tracks, all of which were recorded on Apple's voice memos, give the LP a wistful, reflective energy. Each song flows seamlessly into the next, with ambient, almost hypnotic, soundscapes tied together by the motif "I'll Take A Photo As You Go".
The impressive range of sounds achieved via midi technology and uncleared samples makes the album difficult to define as a unit. Perhaps the most comprehensive descriptor for the AROS listening experience is anemoia, a word coined by John Koenig's The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows which describes the feeling of nostalgia for a time one has never known. Certain moments seem as if the listener shares Roman's exact experiences, but others feel as if they encourage one's own introspection. The album's overall cohesiveness and echoing resonance cast a somber, pensive disposition over the work.
The advanced production techniques and concepts of summerneverlast.'s A Requiem Of Self (07.11.22-07.13.22) hint at a promising future in music, making Roman an artist you'll want to keep on your radar in the coming years. Check out the full album below and let us know what you think.
