In Review: Sampha's "Spirit 2.0"

The man behind countless musical gems has finally returned with his newest single, “Spirit 2.0”.

Sampha’s production is brilliant, with a new, unexpected instrument entering the sphere of sound with every second passing. Listeners are exposed to chime sounds, fluttering synths, grand strings, and pattering drums. Sampha's lush vocals sit perfectly within the range of these different sounds, especially his magnificent harmonies, as they add an abundance of body to the track. He also plays around with his voice in certain sections of the song, digitizing and panning it from ear to ear. The drums are the most engrossing aspect of this track, constantly changing and full of life as they are also panned throughout the track. Sampha earns a 10/10 on the Intersect Rating Scale for his sound.

Within the chorus, Sampha sings,” Waves will catch you, light will catch you, love will catch you, spirit gon' catch you.” In times of despair, we often forget how to harness hope, but Sampha wants to deliver the message that we will always find fulfillment in the end if we follow the natural pathways of life. This pushes us to be free as we move through turmoil once we recognize that no matter what we go through, we can always become grounded eventually. Sampha earns an 8/10 on the Intersect Rating Scale for his lyrics.

Many fans are excited about Sampha’s return because this is the first solo song that he has dropped since the release of his iconic album, Process. This buzz began when Sampha announced shows in New York and London, which he named “Satellite Business”. Fans often get accustomed to consistent drops from artists, but when the release takes longer, the music becomes more valued amongst listeners. Allowing artists to have enough time to be 100% certain about a project is imperative. It is wonderful that Sampha felt comfortable enough to take all the time he needed before coming back with new music. His hard work over the years certainly pays off sonically. Sampha earns another 8/10 on the Intersect Rating Scale for his art.

Overall, Sampha earns 9/10 on the Intersect Rating Scale.
